This is the first windows annoyance problem I have resolved on my own. And I figured it out for myself. No answers but stupid ones through a thousand searches.
If you have recently upgraded to VISTA on your laptop and a cursor that seems to have a mind of it's own, it seems to jump or skip around as you type, randomly replacing what you have typed. I have finally found the answer! The only answer on the web at this time!
I searched for a long time trying to figure out why my cursor kept jumping all over the place. It annoyed the hell out of me.
All answers to the question available said stupid stuff like clean your mouse, or use a mousepad. STUPID! I'm typing, not using my mouse. It's the cursor not the pointer I was having a problem with! besides It's optical, no grime on the wheel, no hairs on the laser light. I have a USB Targus laptop mouse and recently upgraded to VISTA on my Gateway NX560XL although I think it was misbehaving before.
YOUR PROBLEM IS ABOUT TO BE RESOLVED!
Problem: Microsoft uses the generic PS2 mouse driver for your Touchpad! It also loads a USB mouse driver once it is detected. Somehow the 2 mouse drivers combined with no specific touchpad driver seems to be the culprit.
Solution: First go to your computers manufacturers website, search by your model number or just search the driver downloads for "Touchpad". My search came back with "D20023-002-001.exe - Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) Touchpad Driver Version: Synaptics 9.1.3.0" (yours may be different) Download the file. Don't install it just yet. You need to remove the generic PS2 mouse driver. Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, find the mouse section, you should see 2 drivers, one PS2 and antoher for the USB mouse. Uninstall the PS2 driver. Don't reboot or it'll just reinstall the driver. Then run the downloaded Touchpad program and follow the instructions to install (check the readme file). Once installed, reboot. You should now have a touchpad icon in your system tray (lower right) (looks like a grey rectangle with two little buttons underneath). Try typing something in notepad or whatever and your problem should have vanished. I typed this whole blog without one skip, jump or interruption!!!! What a relief.
Bonus solution: Disabling the touchpad altogether! Right click and select properties, you can now disable the touchpad which you could not do before using the generic driver as it wasn't an option. Yahoo!

Thanks for your help (as posted on Annoyances.org) - but my problem was strictly realted to the fact I couldn't turn off my cursor on my horrible Gateway laptop computer without going into the bios. It was a lemon e-machine Gateway anyway, so I now have a Toshiba laptop that's wonderful and has an easy "off" touch pad switch. HOWEVER - I plan on upgrading my laptop to a Vista laptop probably around Christmas - so I will keep your instructions on my favorites. Thanks. Carol
What a relief! Our new Gateway laptop has driven us crazy with its cursor acting like a jumping flea! We just did as you so carefully spelled out and now we, too, can write in peace. BTW, I wanted the flip-top screen which I can write on with a Gateway pen. Using it and One Note in Microsoft Office makes all sorts of fun things possible. Aloha!
I have had this darn cursor problem and lived with it for months. Thanks buddy! Your Blog rocks.

I'm bummed it didn't work for me. I followed the instruction. Unfortuntely, the cursor has a mind of it's own...even as I'm typing this message it's all over the place. I'll take any suggestions. Thanks.
your fix worked for me...what a relief...you are a champion!
the jumping cursor problem occured after re-formating my HP Pavilion dv5230tx Notebook's hard drive & re-installing XP
afer downloading the appropriate Synaptics Touchpad Driver and following your instructions i'm now smiling as i type!
I have only one driver installed for me (the one from Manufacturer-Dell) but still I have this problem the focus of the mouse pointer keeps running all over the place!!
when I tried to uninstall the PS2 mouse driver, the laptop froze and then the hard drive crashed. I had to pay $$ to have everything backed up and have the OS reinstalled and then reinstall Office and everything else all over again! The cursor is still skipping and now I am afraid to do anything because i don't want it to crash again.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, goodness. SO much better. THANK YOU. (I run Windows on an HP Pavillion, but just got the appropriate Touchpad driver. BINGO.)
No "religious nitwit" here, just someone who has more love for others and someone far less prejudiced than you show that you are. Your answer about the cursor problem has been a help to people, but your attitude seems so prejudiced that it is difficult to concentrate on your advice. I am sure that you do not want others pushing their religion on you or them making remarks about your lifestyle choices. If you do not want them treating you that way, then why do you treat ones who do not agree with you that way. It seems as if you are showing a very obvious double standard. That standard being - Don't speak to me about your religion, my lifestyle choice, or any of the other things you noted in your blog, but... you spoke to them about theirs when you called them religious nitwits and made other snide remarks.
Just a thought for you. If you are the kind of person that you seem to be when you introduced yourself in your blog, I am quite sure that you are going to angry about my comments. Thatis not my purpose in writing. My purpose is to ask you to please think about the double standard that you are promoting.
Thank you,

Hi, I just want to thank you for solving my extremely annoying typing problem. I've struggled with this error for over a year now and it finally seems to be sorted. I can't thank you enough!

this didn't work for me. when i go to control panel - mouse - hardware - properties - the option to disable the mouse is greyed out.
when i go to device mgr - mice and other pointing devices I have two devices listed that both say HID-compliant mouse... not sure what to do as this was not mentioned in your instructions. do you have any further advice? (I currently use a Microsoft Wireless mouse)
I'm so glad I found this blog. You have saved my sanity. Having to constantly type long papers for school, it was very inconvenient to have to deal with this little problem. Thank you sooooo much!
OMG! I was going crazy! Thanks much!
Well, so far so good. I have only typed a paragraph but it does seem to be improved. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. The jumping cursor had gotten unbearable.
Thanks for the information. This is happening on a brand new MSI laptop with windows 7. I'll give your suggestion a try in the morning. This seems like a bad bad sign for a new computer. Do you think it is reason to exchange the entire machine?
thanks so much, I've never been able to fix a technological problem on my own, even with directions, but your advice made it really simple and it actually worked, so thank you!
Ur a genius! It worked for me Thank you!
this also worked for me on Win7, what a huge relief! thank you so much for sharing what you found! it was also closing windows i was typing in from my facebox inbox, unreal! thanks again!

Opulently I acquiesce in but I think the list inform should secure more info then it has.
Nice post and this fill someone in on helped me alot in my college assignement. Thanks you as your information.
WOW! Thanks
I believe I fixed this problem once before by a different method, but it didn't last. I'm hoping your fix will be permanent, but for now it's working great. Thank you very, very much!!!!
I had the same problem, it was driving me crazy and I just assumed that it was a virus. I'm not very computer savvy but half an hour ago I decided to Google to see what other people said. I found your blog quite quickly, and though why not give it a go. My laptop is Acer, so I went on their website, downloaded the Touchpad thingy like you said, did everything else like you said (somehow managed to do it!), then rebooted the computer, and wouldn't you know, the problem has actually been fixed.
I have no idea how you worked this out, you must be a genius, but thank you massively. I can now get some actual work done. Thanks again
THANK YOU SOO SOOO SO MUCH! You are a awesome person and I honor your work to find out what this was and solution! Thank you!
You seem to have solved a lot of laptop owners, "Fly-away," cursor problems but I get the same thing on a desk-top computer, no touch pad. Vista, of course, and the curser flies to the "Close page X" or the "Start" button predominantly, any ideas?
Eddie
If I try this will I still be able to use the touchpad? I don't want to have to connect a mouse to my laptop.
Worked Great! Thanks for the tip. Had to download the touchpad drivers from dell, problem solved
Hi there, sounds like this has worked for lots of people, I however got stuck on step 1, when I tried to retrieve the touchpad down load from the manufact. I received a 'No Results!' any suggestions where to go from here? computer is MSI A6000. I'm using a sep. keyboard for this note and it seems not to skip around.
thanks.
You just saved me from giving my laptop a flying lesson. THANK YOU!
Hi! This is great, and I did notice that I do not have a touchpad driver. However, I have a SONY VAIO, and their website does not offer a touchpad driver for my model. VPCEB3AFD. The site offers only Original - Alps Pointing Device for VAIO Driver- which is what I already have. Any advice of what to do next?
Thanks so much!
Alex
Thanx so much. Your instructions worked like a charm! I've been dealing with this for months and now it's fixed! Hooray!
OMG!! YOU ROCK! Thank you SO much! As you said, this is the only place to find a fix for this problem and your instructions are very easy to follow. (see there, my cursor didn't 'jump' one!)
Thanx
Wow I have been dealing with this for months. This worked! Finally!! Thank you so much.
Thank you so much! You have save me a hell of time and frustration.
Many thanks again.
Thank you so much! You have save me a hell of time and frustration.
Many thanks again.
Thank you so much! This had been driving me crazy.
Thanks a lot for your insightful Blog. It helped in solving the issue. Great blog!
Wow, I am so glad I found your post on this issue cuz you solved my problem! I downloaded the fix from the Dell website, and now I type stress-free. Giddyup.
HERE'S A DIFFERENT SOLUTION FROM THE ONE BY BACKWARD SPIRAL!
I just bought a laptop, and was disgusted to find it doing what another, much older laptop had been doing -- cursor jumping while I'm typing.
I tried something different from what the blogger suggested to solve it. My solution worked perfectly.
On my computer, I opened "Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/"
There I found an option called "Devices and Printers." Right under that were several options, including "Mouse".
I clicked on "Mouse", and a box called "Mouse Properties" opened.
One of the options under "Mouse Properties" was something called "Touch Pad Settings". I clicked on that, which opened that tab.
Under that tab were several buttons, one of which again was labeled "Touch Pad Settings". I clicked on that.
That opened up a medium-sized box called "Properties for Synaptics Touchpad".
In that medium-sized box there were a bunch of tiny boxes, some of which were checked. There was also a small movie/animation at the right in the medium-sized box, showing various finger tricks one can do with a touchpad. The little checked boxes to the left of the movie had various labels, each label the name of a finger movement one can do with a touchpad to make the computer screen behave various ways. Here are some of the names of the little boxes that were checked:
1. Two Finger Scrolling
2. Pinch Zoom
3. Scrolling
4. Tapping
As I say, the animation to the right showed a hand executing each of these maneuvers on a touchpad, and what each maneuver does to the screen image.
So guess what I thought when I saw "tapping" as one of the maneuvers?
I instantly realized that the vibrations of my forceful and rapid typing -- even though I was not touching the touchpad -- were having the effect of "tapping" the ultrasensitive touchpad. Thus my cursor would suddenly jump in the middle of my typing, and very annoyingly land in the middle of some finished text, and since I don't have the reflexes of Superman, I'd continue typing away right in the middle of a finished paragraph, messing everything up.
So, I unchecked the little box labeled "tapping". Then I clicked the button labeled "Apply."
And guess what? I have typed this whole comment without one single cursor jump! True, I can no longer do the tapping maneuver on my touchpad, but I never used that maneuver anyway!
I'm so glad I solved this! So annoying it was.

P.S. to my comment immediately above.
Disabling "tapping" did not disable my touchpad! I can still use the touchpad perfectly well. Just tapping is disabled.

I seldom post comments on blogs...BUT I just had to on this one. I updated to Win8 Home Preview and that is when this issue started for me. It made perfect sense from the onset of the blog..THANK YOU.
Thanks this worked a treat we have had 4 computers and all have done the same thing so followed instructions and works fine THANKS
I really don't understand. I went on the manefactuers website, but I don't know where to get the download? It's just a website for buying laptops and stuff, how are you supposed to get a download off of it?
Five years on, this post is still helping people. I had no idea what was up with my computer; I figured it had to be something I was doing inadvertantly but I couldn't think what it was. Eventually I googled the problem, found your post and your advice seems to have worked. I still don't know why my cursor/touchpad suddenly lost it after several months of functioning perfectly, but it's all good now. Thanks!
Thank you SO much! Just got my laptop back after a hard drive replacement, and the cursor jumping around while typing was driving me nuts. Since I type fast, I'd type multiple words further back in the document before I could stop, then had to go looking for that spot before I could even fix anything, then go back to the end and resume. What a relief!
I really want to thank you for your help in solving this problem. I have had this problem on about 5 different computers and have tried everything from wiping the computers clean, to paying a lot of money to have an expert fix it and nothing has worked. I followed your instructions and the problem seems to be solved!!!!! You are a life saver!!
